In Memoriam Peter Bonetti. First saw him 13 April 1963 57 years ago tomorrow.... Resplendent in green as we beat Grimsby at the Bridge on the way to promotion. So many wonderful and courageous performances over the years. A real boyhood hero and part of a great Chelsea side that could and should have won more. RIP Peter you were an inspiration.

Avanti
That the 5-5 game ? Was there little kid with my dad. #.

Odd that probably our best ever. 2 keepers have same Christian name

chelsea1970a
Deffo won us the cup in 70. Was there ever a better goal keeping performance

chelsea1970a
I met Bonetti at St Andrews about 10 years ago - amongst our support with. his friends and family. A humbler and more gentlemanly star could not be imagined while he posed for photos and talked patiently to our lot.

Really saddened to hear the news about the Cat today.. Now my three huge heroes from my youth...Ossie.Butch and the Cat have all passed away.: ((

I hope the three of them can now have a kick-about in a better place.

I can only echo MPD in saying I hope the club will erect a statue of Bonetti next to Osgood.

RIP Peter Bonetti....was and still is my favourite ever keeper.

RIP the Cat. A true blue legend.. Saw him play many many times. A real gentleman off the pitch too as well as on it. A superb keeper one of the very greatest.

He once made my Dad's day when he waved at him on the team Bus.

My thoughts and sincere sympathy to his family and friends.

A very sad day. X

gnome of zurich
RIP The Cat one of my most favourites. Took a Legends Tour of the Bridge with. Him 10 years ago. I told this story on here not that long ago but indulge me: I was asking him about the FA cup Final Replay and he said that in the replay his boot split in the first half so at half time he just taped i[ up as they didnt have spares in those days. He was a true gentleman and one of our great heroes. What a very very very sad day.

Grew up in Royston Claire

True. The fence didn't help.him at all. Was it . Brian Labone who just stood and watched. The Cat was caught between going one way then the other . Got slaughtered for years unfairly. Press were bar stewards. Still are !

I'd love to see a statue of The Cat at The Bridge. In that famous diving pose if that could be achieved.

It's the image so many of us have at the mention of his name.

Brilliant video. 700+ plus appearances and without gloves! The ball. Did hurt in those days.

Sang that once to Yashin watching Western Australia v Moscow.. There were about 30 of us and although I'm sure he didn't hear us the rest of the home crowd were pretty hopeless like their team at the time.

Freo ★
He invented gloves for goalkeepers #.

Mr Parkers Dogbite ★
The Cat. Along with The king and Charlie Cook is the reason for my passion for Chelsea lucky enough to have met him. RIP

TheBoozeInBruges
I'm that old I saw his debut in April 1960 and Citeh. Won 3-0 and he played . well. Hero for me.

Bit of film from 66 Chelsea beating Leeds FA Cup.

blueintheface
"The Cat" small as a goal keeper but so agile. he always gave confidence that even with a one on one he would save it. At the Old Bridge in the Shed you could never get that close every week he would give you a sound performance in the era of great goalkeepers. A sure fire boy's own hero modest as everyone says...... how ever I have great pleasure to say " I saw Peter Bonetti play in goal for Chelsea" its kinda special to feel part of a shared history with one of the clubs greats.

Voltaire returns
RIP the cat one of my favourite ever CFC players #.

ossieisgod
I recall Barry Davies doing a preview of MOTD. for the Lpool v Chelsea game in 1973 saying that watching Peter Bonettis performance should be compulsory viewing for any young aspiring goalkeeper. We lost 1-0 but the Cat was the star of the show. Hopefully it will reappear from some dusty BBC archive.

He was a goalkeeper's goalkeeper. The best the cat. RIP PB #.

What a sad day.. One of the best ever goalkeepers in the world. He may have struggled in todays game but so would just about all of them. One of my first heros always felt confident when he played. We always seemed to lose when he was unfit.

Tributo a una legenda Peter.. Lho visto a Stamford Bridge solo da 1973 in avanti - qualit e classe portiere. Non sapevo che la sua famiglia sono da Canton Ticino in Svizzera dove vivo adesso.

RIP Peter Bonetti. Remember as a kid collecting football cards. Peter Bonetti was one of the first i had and probably got me into supporting Chelsea.

Image (if it loads) is the programme from his Chelsea debut

Had to have re-listen to my old LP of the '70 Cup Final replay radio . commentary. Brought it back how Bonetti was virtually playing on one leg for most of that match. With us 0-1 down and not long before Ossie's iconic equaliser Terry Cooper let fly with a stinging low drive. 'Bonetti....the brave Bonetti... in the goal to our right....got down and how he got a hand to that I'll never know'. An absolute footballing hero. RIP The Cat.

bovis messroom
I idolised Bonetti when I was a child and I played Little League in goal. I can vividly remember the day my Granddad bought me a pair of the Bonetti thin green cloth Goalkeeping Gloves that I cherished in fact I think I may have even gone to bed wearing them at the time :-). I was lucky enough to see the Cat in action every other week during that period too due to my Granddad's best friend working on the turnstiles at the bridge (we got free entry for a few years).

Great memories and so sad that Peter is no longer with us RIP the Cat

★ Far Cry Toff
He was really struggling with that injury too and was still . incredibly agile.

Wrongly blamed for England's 1970 World Cup exit by many after being thrown in at the deep end. He should have played for England much more.

Romans Soldier
I had a pair of them as well as the Bonetti green goalkeeping top with the black trim. I've had my PB Big Head on my mantelpiece for years now

Remember the Cat when he became a postie on the Isle of Skye. He accidentally ran over a . rabbit and had it for his tea!

Romans Soldier
RIP Peter Bonetti can remember going down the park when i was a youngster. in my green goalkeepers jersey ( it didn't have a badge until my father bought a Chelsea one for my mother to sow on for me ) pretending to be Bonetti think dad was hoping id turn into an Argyle fan which was why he bought a green top no chance . Great memories and a sad day . Best wishes .

RIP Cat. Met him at an England training session in Concord MA. I was . walking with my daughter. He was working with Tim Flowers. When I recognized him I blurted out "Mr Bonetti". I was so excited. Felt a complete twat. He said "I'm working now son. Hold on a bit". He came over after he was done and spent a few minutes chatting. He was a top bloke. True Blue legend.

Remember getting Bonetti's autograph. at the old training ground back in the day. Those were the days when you could just walk in and watch. RIP Cat.

Peter Bonetti. You were the first goalkeeper that I watched and when we won the FA cup in 1970..you were set in stone as a legend for me.
The best farewell to The Cat

Chelsea in Oz
RIP Peter Bonetti. One of a team of heroes to me when I was a kid. I remember his heroism at Old Trafford in 1970. He was one of a few that carried on the traditions into the lean years and gave everyone hope that the good times could come back again. Always played the game in the right way. A true sportsman and a Chelsea legend.
