gnome of zurich
Losing Osgood was a sad day this no different I think because Ray was in. the public eye quite a bit and I see him play for both Chelsea and England it has hit me hard this news.

I watched one of our youth programmes years ago when Jose first came along I think Rodgers might of been part of the programme? The way Ray visited and spoke to the youth lads at some place they was staying in was typical of the guy he was.

Absolutely devastated.

When the word legend is used to much but with Butch..... it was well earned. He was a legend when we were very short of them in our early period of decline with many players far from top quality he was a shining star.

he came back to us in a management role and showed his heart for the club.

A great man swell as a great footballer a very sad loss for Chelsea FC

Very sad news RIP Butch :-(.

MrsChelseaFc
I was lucky enough to meet Ray on a couple of occasions both times he. was an absolute gent and talked to you as an equal rather than looking down on you. Told him how I pestered my nan to make a number 8 out of a white tea towell and sew it onto my Chelsea shirt back in the late 70's as Ray was my favourite player which made him chuckle.

A huge loss to Chelsea and it's supporters but also many other clubs fans who warmed to his passion for the game.

I hope the club do something very fitting for such a true club legend and all rough great guy.

And another from Carlo Cudicini. Ill never forget my first day at Harlington in August 1999. You approached me with your big smile and your gentleman-like ways saying "benvenuto al Chelsea!". Mr Fied
Roddy Doyle Novelist and Chelsea fan writes:.
-Were both a bit sad tonight.
-We are.
-Ray Wilkins.
-What a cattle truckin player.
-Ill tell you Chelsea were never the same after he left. Its goin back I know. 1979 I think it was.
-Youre righ. Thats when he came to United.
-If he wasnt dead Id be callin him a cattle truckin traitor. cattle truckin United! But anyway - .
-He was brilliant.
-Briliant no question. One of the few brilliant things about Chelsea back then.
-A great passer of the ball.
-His vision man Jesus. He knew where to put the ball two days bfore the cattle truckin match. He was only 18 when they made him the captain.
-Thats the thing now thats why its so cattle truckin sad.
-Wha?
-His age. He was the first great player tha was the same age as us.
-Youre righ. I remember it was hard to accept at the time. I was askin me ma if I could go out on Sunday night and he was the captain of Chelsea.
-Heres somethin. Ray Wilkins played against both George Best and Ryan Giggs.
-Is tha true?
-It is yeah.
-Thats amazin.
-Says a lot about the man I think. A cattle truckin giant.

I thought that Butch scored in this game. but I must be confusing it with another game where he sublimely chipped the keeper from 20 yards...still interesting interview at the end with Brian Moore...

Indeed. I remember the occasion too and seeing Carlo arrive very shy.... in a Fiat with an Ancona number plate that he must have driven all the way from Castel di Sangro.

Honest statement but very truthful...... In the modern world.... when so many basic standards are missing.... I can't think of any higher praise .... if someone said that about me.... its more important than any CBE OBE or knighthood....

Ray Wilkins was a genuine man.... loved by Chelsea supporters

I'm so so sad at the news of Ray's death. For many of a certain age he was . their first hero in a Chelsea shirt. Certainly by the time I was old enough to go to matches on my own he was the main man. I say man he was 18 18 ffs! and captain of Chelsea Football Club. And what a player he was. Who didn't try a be Butch Wilkins in the playground or on a Sunday morning in the local park? Also our top scorer for two seasons I believe.

Chelsea through and through just look at his answer to Favourite Other Team. What a player what a man. Thank you Ray for all the wonderful memories. A class footballer and a true gentleman. RIP.
